The Best Fruit Salad Recipe

One thing I’ve always hated about making fruit salad is that it usually takes a pretty long time to make. Say goodbye to slicing fruit and making complicated dressings; this quick and easy fruit salad comes together in minutes.

Here’s the trick: I chose fruits that last a long time (so you can make it ahead), are a rainbow of colors (so it’s super purty), and are bite-sized (so no chopping!). All wrapped up with lime zest and juice, this fruit salad is bright and fresh with a touch of tang that complements the natural sweetness of fruit with no added sugar.

Bring this fruit salad to your next picnic along with Curry Chicken Salad, BBQ with Baked Beans, brunch with French Toast Casserole, or kids’ playdate. You will thank me BERRY much. Please laugh…

Fruit Salad Ingredients

Taste the rainbow with this hassle-free fruit salad recipe! Here are the simple ingredients:

Fruit salad ingredients on a blue and white dish towel
  • Green grapes – while you can use red grapes, green grapes add a juicy pop of green to the mix!
  • Pre-cut pineapple chunks – instead of cutting it yourself, buy pre-cut pineapple in the grocery store! If you prefer to cut your own, follow my How to Cut a Pineapple tutorial.
  • Fresh clementines or mandarin oranges – while you can use canned mandarin oranges, fresh is better! Segment your oranges and throw them in.
  • Blueberries – pretty blue and nice and sweet, blueberries are an easy add to fruit salad.
  • Blackberries – blackberries add another color and texture without having to slice and dice anything.
  • Raspberries – vibrant red and sweet-tart, raspberries are awesome in fruit salad! Make sure to toss them in after the other ingredients since they are the most delicate.
  • Lime – buy a lime and zest half of it for a tropical touch. Squeeze in the juice for a hint of citrus without too much acidity. Lime complements all of the fruits so well…you’re going to love it!

How to Make Fruit Salad

  1. Add the fruit. Add the grapes, pineapple, oranges, blueberries and blackberries to a serving bowl.
  2. Add the lime “dressing”. Zest half of a lime and the juice of a full lime into the fruit salad. Mix!
  3. Toss and serve. Add in the raspberries, gently toss, and serve.

My Pro Tip

Tips and Helpful Swaps

Toss raspberries last to prevent them from getting squished.

Rinse and pat dry fruit carefully, especially the blackberries and raspberries, so you don’t accidently crush them!

Other fruits that work really well in this recipe are: red grapes, pre-cut mango or melon (learn how to Cut a Cantaloupe or How to Cut a Watermelon using my guides), sliced strawberries, or pomegranate seeds.

Prefer a sweeter version? Use orange juice and zest instead of lime and even add in a dash of honey or maple syrup.

FAQs

Can you use frozen fruit in this fruit salad recipe?

It’s best to use fresh fruit. Frozen fruit that’s thawed can get mushy and watery.

Can you make fruit salad ahead of time?

Yes, in fact this fruit salad tastes even better the next day! Make it up to 2-3 days in advance. Cover and store in the fridge until ready to enjoy.

What is the secret to good fruit salad?

Varied textures and colors, plus a simple dressing like lime juice and zest make for the perfect fruit salad!

What fruits shouldn’t be mixed in a fruit salad?

Stay away from fruits that get mushy or brown fast like bananas, peaches, and pears.

What liquid do you put in a fruit salad?

Keep it simple with lime juice and zest that pairs perfectly with almost every fruit under the sun. Lime adds a touch of citrusy acidity that isn’t overwhelming while adding freshness and brightness!
