This guacamole recipe really is the best! Learn how to make guacamole with just a few simple ingredients, and you’ll want to make it every taco Tuesday, football Sunday, and every day in between!

Save the Recipe!
Football Sundays are a BIG deal in my house, and this guacamole is 1,000% a staple here on gameday. I make this recipe almost every Sunday, and we never get sick of it!
Listen – I’m not saying this guac will change your life…but it might.
It’s one that disappears first at every party. People will fight over it, and you’ll secretly love it. So grab a bowl, mash some avocados, and let’s make the good stuff.
Serve with Homemade Tortillas Chips, on top Salmon Tacos, or just scoop it right from bowl-to-mouth. I won’t judge.
Guacamole Recipe Ingredients
You’ll only need a handful of simple ingredients to make the best guacamole! Here they are:

- Ripe avocados – you can’t make guacamole without ripe avocados!
- Firm tomato – tomato adds pops of juiciness! I like using a slightly underripe or firm tomato so the tomato juices don’t make the guacamole runny.
- Red onion – not only does red onion add crunch but perfect oniony-sweet flavor. Feel free to add white onion instead if that’s what you have on-hand!
- Garlic – everything’s better with garlic!
- Jalapeño – like it spicy? Add finely chopped jalapeño.
- Fresh lime juice – you can’t beat fresh lime juice in guacamole. It’s bright, tangy and citrusy, cutting the buttery richness of the avocadoes.
- Fresh cilantro – cilantro and guacamole are like PB&J! But if you’re one of those people who hates cilantro, no problem. Leave it out or use fresh parsley instead.
My Pro Tip
Recipe Pro Tips
- Ripen avocados quickly by placing them in a paper bag with a banana or apple at room temperature. Ethylene gas from the fruit speeds up ripening, usually within 1–2 days.
- Don’t over-mash. Use a fork or a potato masher for the best texture.
- Adjust salt, lime, and heat to taste.
How to Make Guacamole
Making amazing homemade guacamole is SO easy. Here are the 3 simple steps (full recipe in recipe card!):

Step 1: Slice the avocados in half, remove the pits, and scoop out the avocados into a medium bowl.

Step 2: Add in tomato, onion, garlic, jalapeño, lime juice, cilantro, and salt.

Step 3: Use the back of a fork to mash and mix together the ingredients to desired chunkiness. Dig in!
Recipe Variations
Want to change things up? Here are some of my favorite variations on classic guacamole:
- Extra spicy: add in extra jalapeño and a dash of cayenne.
- Smoky: add smoked paprika or chipotle powder.
- Tropical: fold in diced mango or pineapple.
- Veggie forward: fold in Grilled Corn, diced cucumber or radishes.
- Cheesy: add in crumbled queso fresco or feta.
- Nutty: sprinkle pumpkin seeds on top.
How to Serve Guacamole
You can’t go wrong serving guacamole with Homemade Tortilla Chips and salsas like Mango Salsa, Salsa Verde, Avocado Salsa, and Corn Salsa.
You can also serve it alongside Mexican-Inspired dishes like a Chicken Quesadilla, Shrimp Tacos, or Chicken Taquitos.

Storing Leftovers (And How to Keep Guacamole Green!)
Guacamole is best enjoyed right away, but it will keep well for up to 2 days. The absolute BEST way to keep your guacamole green is to press plastic wrap directly on top of the guacamole to keep air out. Then seal the container shut with a lid or another layer of plastic wrap.
I don’t recommend freezing guacamole; the texture changes too much!

Notes
- You’ll need 1-2 limes to yield 3 tablespoons of juice.
- Don’t like cilantro? Leave it out or use fresh parsley instead!
- Look for avocados that have some give when pressed but aren’t mushy. Mushy avocados are often brown inside!
