There are tons of ways to cook corn on the cob, but if you ask me, this oven method wins every time. Brush each ear with a little oil or butter, wrap it in foil, and let the oven do the work. The corn steams in its own little foil packet until the kernels are juicy, tender, and practically begging for a few pats of butter.

No giant pot of boiling water, no weird milk and butter concoctions, no extra dishes, no guesswork…and you’ll get sweet, perfectly cooked corn every time. I’ve been making corn on the cob this way for years, and as corny as it sounds, it’s a-maize-ing!

  • No guess work: my method is straightforward and easy to follow.
  • No mess: just brush, wrap, and throw in the oven, no pots or pans needed.

How to Cook Corn on the Cob

The best way to cook corn on the cob is by steaming them in foil in the oven! It’s mess-proof, easy, and yields the juiciest, most tender corn every time. Here’s how you do it (this is an outline; for the full recipe, see the recipe card below!):

Brushing corn on the cob with butter or oil

Step 1: Preheat the oven to 400°F. Brush each ear with ¼ teaspoon oil or melted butter.

Wrapping each cob with foil

Step 2: Tightly wrap each ear individually in a piece of aluminum foil.

Step 3: Arrange in a single layer directly on the middle oven rack. Cook for 20–25 minutes.

Step 4: Serve with your favorite toppings.

How Long to Cook Corn on the Cob

In the oven at 400°F, corn on the cob is done in 20–25 minutes, depending on how tender you like it. I usually aim for 25 minutes, which gives you perfectly tender, juicy kernels. If you prefer corn with a little more bite, pull it out around 20 minutes, or 25 minutes for a bit more tender kernels. For extra-soft kernels, let it go for up to 30 minutes.

My Pro Tips

Storage and Reheating Tips

Store leftover corn, still on the cob or cut off the cob, in an airtight container in the refrigerator once cooled completely for up to 4 days.

Reheat corn on the cob wrapped in foil, in the oven, on low heat (250°F) until just warmsince cooked corn can dry out and become tough.

If you’d like to make it ahead, keep cobs wrapped in foil out of the oven for up to 30 minutes, to keep the heat in until you’re ready to serve. Or turn the oven down to 170°F to keep them just warm for up to an hour.

Topping and Seasoning Ideas

Corn on the cob is delish with just butter and flaky salt, but it’s also a great blank canvas! Try one of these easy topping ideas:

  • Classic: butter and flaky salt (go wild and make Homemade Butter!)
  • Garlic herb: garlic butter (fresh minced or garlic powder) with chopped parsley or chives
  • Mexican-inspired: cut off the cob and make into Mexican Street Corn
  • Parmesan: melted butter or olive oil, grated Parmesan, and cracked black pepper
  • Spicy: butter or olive oil with cayenne, smoked paprika, or your favorite hot sauce
  • Lemon herb: butter or olive oil, lemon zest, and fresh dill or basil
  • Everything bagel: butter or olive oil and a sprinkle of everything bagel seasoning
  • Sweet & salty: butter with a drizzle of hot honey or honey and a pinch of flaky salt

Yessssss! I loved this recipe. It was so easy and came out incredibly juicy. I usually grill them but that’s kind of a pain for me. I liked wrapping them into their own little foil pouch and straight into the oven. I’m not going back!
