Learn how to make the best Moscow mule at home, with just 3 ingredients and no special equipment needed!

Save the Recipe!
There’s a reason the Moscow mule has endured for nearly a century! I’ve made more than my fair share of them, experimenting with every ginger beer, vodka, and lime combo I could get my hands on. What I’ve learned is that a great mule isn’t about flashy ingredients…it’s about balance, temperature, and a little attention to detail!
The right vodka, the right ginger beer, freshly squeezed lime, and yes, a properly chilled copper mug, all come together to create that perfect fizzy sip just like my French 75 Recipe. Let’s get into it!

Moscow Mule History
The story is actually super cool. The Moscow mule was born from a little marketing genius. In the 1940s, a vodka distributor, a ginger beer maker, and a Los Angeles bar owner all had the same problem: too much product and not enough people interested.
They combined vodka, spicy ginger beer, and fresh lime, and poured it into a copper mug so it stood out, and suddenly Americans were hooked. What started as a clever way to move inventory became one of the most iconic cocktails around!

Ingredients & Variations

- Plain vodka – using plain vodka is most important. Tito’s, Absolut or Grey Goose are my favorite options. You definitely don’t need to use top-shelf vodka. Change it up and try tequila for a Mexican mule, gin for a London mule, or dark rum to make Moscow mule’s cousin, a Dark ‘n Stormy!
- Fresh lime – use fresh lime juice for that classic crisp taste with enough acidity to cut through the sweetness of the ginger beer. Add a splash of apple cider for fall vibes like my Apple Martini or muddled berries for summer vibes!
- Ginger beer – using quality ginger beer is really important! The best option is Fever-Tree ginger beer which is really balanced (not too sweet or spicy and bold ginger flavor).
Don’t forget to add lots of ice to keep your mule cold!
How to Make a Moscow Mule
One of my favorite things about Moscow mules is they are one of the easiest cocktails to make at home. Here are the steps; for the full recipe, see the recipe card below!
Step 1: Fill a copper mug three-quarters of the way up with ice.
Step 2: Add vodka and lime juice.
Step 3: Top with ginger beer.
Step 4: Gently stir, garnish with a lime wheel, and enjoy!

A Note on the Iconic Copper Mug
Why a copper mug, you ask? The copper mug isn’t just for show. It keeps your Moscow mule extra cold from the first sip to the last. The metal hugs the ice and lime, giving you that crisp, refreshing chill. Plus, it’s part of the drink’s signature look!
No copper mug? No problem. Use a highball or rocks glass instead.

The Best Vodka and Ginger Beer for Moscow Mules
Here are my favorite choices for the best Moscow mule ever!
Best Vodka:
- Grey Goose (favorite when splurging!): silky texture and refined finish, but more expensive.
- Tito’s Handmade Vodka (favorite on a budget!): smooth and neutral flavor.
- Absolut Vodka: slightly creamy mouthfeel and neutral flavor.
Best Ginger Beer:
- Fever‑Tree Premium Ginger Beer (favorite!): balanced sweetness, spiciness and fizz with deep ginger flavor.
- Q Ginger Beer: extra spicy and seriously crisp…great if you love bold heat.
- Gosling’s Stormy Ginger Beer – extra ginger flavor.
My Pro Tip
Pro Tips
- Ice matters: use plenty of ice so the drink stays super cold without diluting too quickly.
- Use fresh lime: skip bottled juice. Fresh lime brightens the drink and balances the sweetness of the ginger beer.
- Quality ginger beer over ginger ale: ginger ale is too sweet and soft. Use ginger beer for that signature kick.
- Pour in order: Ice first, then vodka and lime juice, and finally top with ginger beer to keep fizz alive.
