San Diego, California: Why It’s the Best Place to Honeymoon!

The hubby and I wanted to stay in the U.S. just in case COVID-19 cases exploded again and to save some money! So we decided to fly on over to San Diego for 8 days. It was the perfect mix of relaxation, adventure and activity, and of course…food and wine!

Relaxation Paradise

It had been a while since Eric and I took a long vacation, so relaxation was on the top of our list! Although we both get stir-crazy after about an hour of laying out on the beach, we took relaxing beach walks (our favorite was Solana Beach) and relaxed by the pool (without phones, and of course, with piña coladas!!). We stayed at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar which was a total treat and completely out of our price range, but a corporate discount allowed us to have a once-in-a-lifetime trip!

Relaxation & negronis (our favorite cocktail!)

Perfect Honeymoon Adventures & Activities

From seeing gorillas and giraffes at the San Diego Safari Park, to sipping incredible wine on the Escondido wine trail (like Hungry Hawk Vineyards), to site-seeing along the Coronado Island bikeway, to swanky La Jolla shopping, to Mexican heritage-filled Old Town, to Torrey Pines hikes and golf-course views, to horseback riding on the San Diego/Mexico border, to Embarcadero speedboat adventures…we barely scratched the surface of San Diego!

Lions and tigers and giraffes…oh my!
Biking along the beach was much easier than biking up the mountains! HA!
San Diego wine country is underrated.
We ended our trip with a horseback riding adventure on the Mexico border! Meet Arlow (Eric’s huge, always hungry horse) and my stubborn, mischievous horse Fancy.

Most Important Part of a Honeymoon? The Food!

The food in San Diego is A+. We found some hidden gem locations that served up some of the best meals of our lives! The best restaurants and food spots we discovered were:

The Social Club at the Grand Del Mar is amazing for cocktails & drinks!
The Social Club is also great for little bites like this INCREDIBLE tuna appetizer made my Chef Axel who treated us with extra special apps!
The croissants and pastries at Wayfarer are Mind. Blowing.
Claire’s on Cedros became our go-to for a delicious Cali-style breakfast or brunch!
Mooooo-re Moo Time please!
I usually prefer a big bowl of pasta done exceptionally well (simply delicious food), but Juniper & Ivy is “fancy” food done absolutely masterfully. It was worth every penny!

Our Honeymoon Trip In 60 Seconds (Video)

Relax. Adventure. Eat. Repeat. Honeymoon heaven! Although it’s hard to not yearn for another trip as special as this one, it really feels good to be back in my happy place…cooking and forcing Eric to eat 10 batches of my next recipe experimentation. LOL!

On to the next adventure…

About Grace Vallo

Welcome to my kitchen! Cooking and baking with the seasons has always been a part of my life. Here in New England, cooking and baking with the seasonal flavors available is a way of life. It's the "feeling" that you get when making homemade popsicles or grilled meats in the summer, apple pie with Mom's pie crust recipe in the fall, or a warm bowl of hearty pasta in the winter. Whether it’s Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter or any holiday in between, I hope my recipes satisfy your seasonal cravings!
