Love is in the air as Valentine’s Day is right around the corner! I know there’s some frantic guys who are wondering “what the heck to do” besides a pharmacy box of chocolate and a dozen red roses. Read on, men, because I’m about to save you from the dark generic tunnel!
Take an extra 20 minutes to create beautiful tomato roses, which, by the way, are way easier to make than it looks!
Turn your edible roses into a classic Caprese with fresh mozzarella, aromatic basil, and a drizzle of sweet balsamic glaze and rich extra virgin olive oil.
Makes: 1 appetizer portion
Prep time: 10 minutes
Cook time: 0 minutes
Total time: 10 minutes
The Ingredients
3 medium tomatoes (I find Campari tomatoes are the easiest size to use)
3 Ciliegine-sized fresh mozzarella balls (I like buffalo mozzarella)
Sprig fresh basil
Balsamic glaze
Extra virgin olive oil
Salt
The Steps
Create spiraling, thin strips of tomato skin by running a sharp knife around the outside of each tomato. Once a strip has been made, on a cutting board, roll the skin as tight as possible into a spiraling circle. Before setting the spiral down, flip the spiral to the other side and gently loosen the “pedals” until the desired rose evolves. Repeat process with other tomatoes.
Place roses on a plate or in a shallow bowl. Add mozzarella balls and basil in desired design. Create dots of balsamic glaze, drizzle with olive oil, and add a pinch of salt.
Serve with love to your special someone! Awwww.
