It’s the holiday and who wants to skip dessert? Certainly not me.
What do I mean by healthier? Yes, I didn’t take the “yummy” out of dessert, but I used whole grains, less fat, and less sugar than a typical crumble recipe! And believe it or not, this Healthier Apple Crumble is still everything dessert should be.
Warm, buttery, and crisp on the outside with a soft, cinnamon sweet apple interior. Whole grain flour, oats, and pecans add a depth of flavor and richness.
You won’t miss that giant cup of sugar and sticks of butter used in most Apple Crumble recipes. My less-guilt, more happy-tummy recipe is certainly sweet tooth approved!
Makes: 1 single-serve bowl (or to share for two)
1/4 cup instant oats
1/4 cup whole grain flour
1/4 cup low-fat milk
2 tablespoons cold unsalted butter
1 tablespoon cinnamon
1 tablespoon real vanilla extract
1 heaping tablespoon light brown sugar
1 heaping tablespoon chopped pecans
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 Granny Smith apple, peeled & thinly sliced
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon light brown sugar
1 teaspoon real vanilla extract
In a medium bowl, combine all “topping” ingredients with a fork into a semi-moist crumble.
In another bowl, combine all “filling” ingredients.
Place “filling” in a oven-safe shallow bowl. Evenly disperse “topping” on top of the “filling.” Bake at 400 degrees for 25 minutes. Serve immediately (with a scoop of Vanilla Bean ice cream if you dare)!
