Blackberry Mint Julep
Jul 18, 2017, Updated Feb 23, 2022
This blackberry mint julep is a “berry” refreshing cocktail to keep your summer cool (LOL please laugh). Tart, fresh blackberries and a splash of club soda, mixed with a dash of maple syrup, brings out the rich caramel and vanilla notes of bourbon. Add a few sprigs of aromatic mint for an extra summery flare!
Use the flavors of summer to cool off a hot summer night with family and friends.
Serves one: for one high-ball glass
The Ingredients
50 ml (1 nip!) of good quality bourbon (use less for those who like their cocktails less potent!)
10 blackberries, washed
3 sprigs fresh mint, washed
1/2 cup club soda
2 teaspoons maple syrup
Ice cubes
The Steps
Add 9 blackberries and 2 sprigs of mint to a high-ball glass. With the back of a fork, crush the blackberries and mint until the blackberries are smashed into a pulp. Let sit in glass for 20 minutes to give the mint time to release its flavor! Remove mint leaves.
In another high-ball glass, add ice cubes, club soda, and bourbon. Stir with spoon. Add 2 teaspoons of maple syrup.
Add smashed blackberries and their juices. I particularly enjoy the richer taste and added texture from both the blackberries’ juices and their pulp. But if you prefer to strain the blackberries and only use their juices, feel free as well! Stir to combine.
Garnish with mint leaf and blackberry. Tip: make a slit in blackberry with a paring knife and wedge on side of glass. That way, the berry stays put on the glass and doesn’t slip into the drink!
Enjoy sipping this eye-catching and tastebud-pleasing summer refresher!
